FITZGERALDS SIDEBAR Presents: HENRY CARPENDER QUINTET FREE SHOW! RESERVATION AVAILABLE! Henry Carpender is a trombonist, composer, and educator based in the city of Chicago. An artist who is equally informed by his classical training, love of Jazz, and childhood playing rock music (primarily with his father John Carpender), Henry's playing and writing is a charming blend of punchy, sensitive, quirky, and dripping with love for life and self expression. Henry's dedication to music making began at age 13 when he played his first gig with the much beloved local band Expo '76. Since then, through both his education and the beginning of his professional freelance career, Henry has been fortunate enough to share the stage with Dag Juhlin, Billy Harper, Robbie Fulks, Tanya Darby, Cathy Richardson, NRBQ and the Canadian Brass. Henry has also enjoyed a healthy start to a career as a private instructor and group music educator, running a small studio of dedicated middle and high schoolers across the Chicagoland area. When he's not playing or teaching, he can be found playing video games, cooking a new dish, or relaxing on Montrose beach. This show will be an opportunity to premiere new work, revisit some favorites, and share arrangements of some of Henry's favorite artists. CHRIS FOREMAN Chris Foreman is a masterful musician and heir to the throne occupied by the soulful, bluesy jazz organ legends who were once his influence. Blind at birth, Foreman started playing piano at age five and began formal training at seven. As a teenager he was attracted to the organ sounds of Jack McDuff, Groove Holmes, JimmySmith and Jimmy McGriff. This attraction led Chris to pursue playing jazz on the organ, which he undertook through intensive study of recordings. Unlike many African-American musicians whose musical knowledge begins and is established through the church, Chris didn't start his apprenticeship as a church organist until he was almost twenty years old - well after his jazz roots were established. He has arrived at a most exciting blend of blues-gospel and jazz and has developed a stunning command and range on the instrument. The blend of his sound is evident in his professional experience, which has included work with Hank Crawford, Albert Collins, Bernard Purdie, The Mighty Blue Kings and Deep Blue Organ Trio. GREG ROCKINGHAM Drummer Greg Rockingham began playing when he was just three years old and debuted as a professional musician at age five in his father's jazz ensemble. An alumnus of the famed Interlochen Arts Academy and Northeastern University, he has won numerous musical awards from the Notre Dame Jazz Festival. Greg has performed or recorded with a wide range of famous names, including the orchestras of Glenn Miller and Guy Lombardo, vocalists Freddie Cole, Patty Page and Jerry Vale and instrumentalists Nat Adderley, Kenny Burrell, Charles Earland, Irene Reid, Ellis Marsalis, Nancy Wilson, and Deep Blue Organ Trio. GREG JUNG Greg Jung is a Chicago based alto saxophonist, originally from Albany, NY. He earned a Bachelor's degree from SUNY Purchase where he studied with Jon Gordon, Ralph Lalama, Gary Smulyan, Mark Vinci, Steve Wilson, Todd Coolman, Jon Faddis, Hal Galper, Charles Blenzig and others. In 2014 Greg won the Vandoren Emerging Artist Competition, and traveled to perform that year in Paris, France. He spent three years in NYC before deciding to travel the country, performing in clubs and on the street in many of America's great cities and small towns. It was in this way that he ended up in Chicago, where he has performed at venues like the Green Mill, Andy's, Winters, Hungry Brain and the Chicago Jazz Festival. Since emerging onto the scene, he has shared the stage with many of the world-class musicians that reside in the city. Greg received the Chicago Luminarts Cultural Foundation Fellowship in 2023.

Common Ghosts is the newest project led by Chicago pianist Erez Dessel. Featuring poet Kai Ihns, violinist Caroline Jesalva, and drummer Colin Dorion, the group strikes at the core of sound and language, deftly weaving together poetry and music and investigating where the two seem to blur into one. They take a multi-directional approach to music, letting cacophony accompany sentimental balladry, but they're never adversarial, often falling into a dense groove that intertwines Ihns' words with the rest of the band. Every Tuesday and Wednesday at the Relax Attack Jazz Series, we present Chicago's top jazz artists in a lively atmosphere, full of cocktail-shaking and spirited conversation.

Hes definitely the gunslinger guitarist of the 21st century,- Peter Frampton), with subsequent tours seeing him supporting and sharing the stage with acts such as Jeff Beck, The Who, Joe Bonamassa, Kid Rock, Lynyrd Skynyrd, George Thorogood, Brian Setzer, the Sammy Hagarfronted supergroup Chickenfoot, and guitar hero Joe Satriani who called Davy My favorite modern Bluesman. Knowles has several top-5 Billboard Blues charting albums under his belt, high profile TV appearances (Jimmy Kimmel Live and CBS Good Morning America among others), and has been praised with high accolades from heroes and press alike - but its not just the music industry who has taken note. Knowles was also the very first artist in history to perform live to the International Space Station directly from mission control in Houston TX, and has had his music taken to the Space Station by two astronauts, Nicole Stott and Ron Garan, on their respective missions orbiting Earth.Never one to be satisfied or to sit still, Knowles has explored multiple genres and styles, from the hard-hitting 70s classic rock influenced album Three Miles From Avalon, to the haunting acoustic delta blues of 1932, and the sweet, soul-searching folk of 2023s If I Should Wander. Whether spending an evening onstage armed with just an acoustic guitar, or wielding his well worn and trusty Telecaster while fronting his blues/rock trio - and at any point in between the two - Davy Knowles is one of the most versatile and formidable songwriters, vocalists and musicians in the world today. Mike Reed's The Separatist Party announces their new album, Sing the Color Blue (out October 23rd via Thrill Jockey) and, in conjunction, release its lead single, "New Angels." Sing the Color Blue is a recording assembled over years of sessions, rehearsals, false starts, and renewed approaches, eventually becoming a document of both persistence and transformation. It reunites Mike Reed with Rob Frye, Cooper Crain, Dan Quinlivan (all of the trio Bitchin Bajas), Marvin Tate, and Ben LaMar Gay in a set that moves between composition, reconstruction, improvisation, and song form. The unusual length and shape of Sing the Color Blue's creation is part of what gives the album its character. Elements reach back across nearly a decade, with initial band tracking beginning in January 2022 at Constellation in Chicago and the majority of the recording completed between November 2023 and April 2024 at Electrical Audio. This approach is something Reed refers to as "collage recording." The title Sing the Color Blue also reflects that spirit of transformation.

With Paul Asaro on piano and Peter Ho on cornet, this group captivates the room with hot solos, sweet melodies, and authentic Chicago style.

The Bread and Butter Band is a classic rock and roots musical group that started in the early 2000's, playing regularly at Nick's Beer Garden on Milwaukee Avenue. For the last several years, the band has been playing regularly at the Hungry Brain on West Belmont Avenue. The music runs the gamut from jazz and blues to classic rock and original music drawing on everything from jazz, blues and country to traditional Irish music.

Belgian/Norwegian pianist "Jason Cambrian" returns to Chicago to re-explore a trio he started in 2025 with Chicago-based saxophonist Dave Rempis and drummer Bill Harris.
