After thirty-five years of being at the forefront of the ever-evolving musical landscape of New Orleans, Grammy Award winner Jon Cleary decided to bring that sound back home, both figuratively and literally. He assembled his Absolute Monster Gentlemen (his acclaimed all-star big band) in his home studio in the Bywater neighborhood of New Orleans, drew up a setlist of some of his most beloved songs and some new favorites and rolled tape.We set out to capture that sound in the old-fashioned way: everybody in the room, playing together, Cleary explains.The result is The Bywater Sessions, a musical tour-de-force that showcases the grit, funk and joy thats packed concert halls from New Orleans to Tokyo and beyond. Co-produced by Cleary and John Porter (Roxy Music, The Smiths, Taj Mahal), its a stunning collection of performances that affirms Clearys place in the New Orleans musical vanguard.Theres a lot to be said for the lean and mean sound of a piano trio, stripped down to basics, simple and direct, Cleary says. But recently, Ive been experimenting with different combinations; adding horns, guitar, percussion and even another keyboard player. This expanded line-up has allowed the arrangements to blossom in new directions.As for the musicians, its the best of the best. Long time Monster Gentlemen Cornell Williams and A.J. Hall anchor the band on bass and drums, respectively. They are joined by Nigel Hall (Lettuce) on Hammond organ, Pedro Segundo (Ronnie Scotts All Stars) on percussion, Xavier Lynn (MonoNeon, Ledisi) on guitar, and an all-star horn section of Aaron Narcisse (Delfeayo Marsalis & the Uptown Jazz Orchestra), Charlie Halloran (Squirrel Nut Zippers, Preservation Hall All Stars) and Jason Mingledorff (Galactic).Sophisticated, nasty, good-time, low-down funk is the folk music of New Orleans, Cleary says. Everyone playing on this recording is a New Orleanian by birth or by choice, having learned their craft at the feet of the masters who in turn were taught by the old lions in their day - its a tradition stretching back over two hundred years. The roots go deep, but each generation, growing up with street parades and second-lines, absorbs the old and introduces the new, gently coaxing the essential essence into and out of each succeeding decade.

Jalen Ngonda honours soul musics rich history while pushing it forward into new territory, an artist whos both archivist and explorer, a disciple of the greats actively shaping the future of music. Having spent the last three years growing this new soul vision from small clubs to arenas and festivals across the world Ngonda stands poised to become the new spokesman of authentic soul with the release of his second album Doctrine Of Love.Doctrine Of Love is an instant classic of an album, a long player alive with a confidence and swagger that seals the young singers reputation as not only the spiritual heir of souls great leading men but a one-off songwriting talent stepping far out from the shadows of his artistic ancestors. The title track Doctrine Of Love sets both the emotional tone and musical template for the rest of the album, I wrote that track when I was trying to do anything to get out of the studio remembers Ngonda. I was listening to a lot of James Brown at the time and that was an inspiration - Doctrine to me was a word no-one ever uses, I took it to be like a certificate, the Certificate of Love - look, I think maybe I meant doctorate, but we wrote it and recorded it and now its a whole thing. The Doctrine of Love is multi-faceted of course - yes, it can be a cool word that fits the song, it can be a code, a philosophy, words to live by, words to love by, words to write some classic music by. I just write the song, Ngonda enthuses, the listener can interpret it however they want.The difference that makes Jalen Ngonda a pioneer rather than a disciple of this soul doctrine is he lives it 100%. He has an insatiable vinyl digging habit, searching for records wherever he goes in the world. His grandmother gave him a shitload of Stax and Motown 45s as a teenager and that gave him the bug. I listen almost exclusively to music from the 60s, he enthuses. The 50s, the 40s. Pretty much nothing past about 1972. Records do sound slightly better on an analogue system, but its more of a behavioural thing with me. This extends to his effortlessly classic style, most of it is quite retro at the moment, he admits, that old skool thing. Who knows, soon I might be dressing in baggy jeans and sneakers, Ive kind of been feeling that, then the month after I might be dressing from the 1940s. On stage I dress in 1950s clothing because I want to wear something slick when Im singing a slick song. The way he conducts himself on stage is an extension of this, the model of gentlemanly charm and grace, as if hed had a crash course from the legendarily rigorous Motown charm school. Hes a 21st century modern spirit questing for vintage authenticity and the walking embodiment of a classic soul gentleman, a Marvin Gaye for the Discogs era.

CHRIS FOREMAN Chris Foreman is a masterful musician and heir to the throne occupied by the soulful, bluesy jazz organ legends who were once his influence. Blind at birth, Foreman started playing piano at age five and began formal training at seven. As a teenager he was attracted to the organ sounds of Jack McDuff, Groove Holmes, JimmySmith and Jimmy McGriff. This attraction led Chris to pursue playing jazz on the organ, which he undertook through intensive study of recordings. Unlike many African- American musicians whose musical knowledge begins and is established through the church, Chris didn't start his apprenticeship as a church organist until he was almost twenty years old - well after his jazz roots were established. He has arrived at a most exciting blend of blues-gospel and jazz and has developed a stunning command and range on the instrument. The blend of his sound is evident in his professional experience, which has included work with Hank Crawford, Albert Collins, Bernard Purdie, The Mighty Blue Kings and Deep Blue Organ Trio. GREG ROCKINGHAM Drummer Greg Rockingham began playing when he was just three years old and debuted as a professional musician at age five in his father's jazz ensemble. An alumnus of the famed Interlochen Arts Academy and Northeastern University, he has won numerous musical awards from the Notre Dame Jazz Festival. Greg has performed or recorded with a wide range of famous names, including the orchestras of Glenn Miller and Guy Lombardo, vocalists Freddie Cole, Patty Page and Jerry Vale and instrumentalists Nat Adderley, Kenny Burrell, Charles Earland, Irene Reid, Ellis Marsalis, Nancy Wilson, and Deep Blue Organ Trio. GREG JUNG Greg Jung is a Chicago based alto saxophonist, originally from Albany, NY. He earned a Bachelor's degree from SUNY Purchase where he studied with Jon Gordon, Ralph Lalama, Gary Smulyan, Mark Vinci, Steve Wilson, Todd Coolman, Jon Faddis, Hal Galper, Charles Blenzig and others. In 2014 Greg won the Vandoren Emerging Artist Competition, and traveled to perform that year in Paris, France. He spent three years in NYC before deciding to travel the country, performing in clubs and on the street in many of America's great cities and small towns. It was in this way that he ended up in Chicago, where he has performed at venues like the Green Mill, Andy's, Winters, Hungry Brain and the Chicago Jazz Festival. Since emerging onto the scene, he has shared the stage with many of the world class musicians that reside in the city. Greg received the Chicago Luminarts Cultural Foundation Fellowship in 2023.

Around the age of 3, Eddies cousin, Bernice Benson, who played piano at Eddies mothers church, began teaching him how to play the piano where he learned to play by ear and eventually learned to read music.Eddie learned to play the clarinet, vibraphone, and saxophone while attending DuSable High School in Chicago, Illinois under the guidance of a well-known and influential musical director, Captain Walter Dyett. Captain Dyett was responsible for the development of several Jazz musicians who came out of Chicago from the 1940s to the early 1960s. Eddie always wanted to play the saxophone simply because he admired the way it looked, however in order to play saxophone for Captain Dyett one had to play the clarinet first, so Eddies first wind instrument was the clarinet. Kirby earned a Song of the Year Grammy nomination in 2023 for his contribution to Steve Lacys Bad Habit.Since 2020, hes focused on his vibrant solo careerreleasing 8 LPs and earning two Libera Award nominations for Jazz Album of the Year. His work has received praise from Pitchfork, The Fader, and the Los Angeles Times.As a film composer, Kirby scored the soundtrack for Cryptozoo, which received the NEXT Innovator Award at Sundance. He scored The Luckiest Man in America starring Paul Walter Hauser and Walton Goggins. Most recently, his music provided the soundtrack to the Oscar-nominated short film Retirement Plan

There are many moments that can define a man's life and for Pharez Whitted, this is one of them. He's taken on the new role as Chicago's Youth Symphony Orchestra (CYSO) Jazz Director and Howard Reich at the Chicago Tribune described Pharez perfectly - "Few Chicago musician-educators are more qualified than Whitted to build the new band, for he commands a richly deserved reputation as a trumpet virtuoso, seasoned educator and irrepressible champion of the music." Whitted is humble with his legacy and his deep roots in music go as far back as the 1930's in Indianapolis where the Hampton Family Band first began performing. His mother VIrtue, his uncle Slide Hampton and the other 10 siblings (12 in total) laid the foundation with their self-educated and courageous father, Clarke "Deacon" Hampton at the helm. With that level of determination and talent, Whitted was destined to inherit the gift of music. He began his career in 1982 not long after earning his Master's Degree at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. He's been on staff at Chicago State University The Ohio State University and Wabash College. He recorded his first self-entitled album, 'Pharez Whitted' with Motown in 1994 and continued recording solo albums ever since. He's performed with Nancy Wilson, Freddie Hubbard, Slide Hampton, John Mellencamp, Chaka Khan, Ahmad Jamal, George Duke, Kirk Whalum, Elvin Jones, Branford Marsalis and Meshell Ndegeocello to name a few. He is currently a clinician Jazz at Lincoln Center youth outreach program, he's a staple at Rivinia's Jazz Scholar program in Chicago and his newest role at CYSO to help find its identity and sound while bringing new faces to the young jazz scene of Chicago.

Lauras performances are a reflection of her roots: rich in simplicity, an appreciation for the past and finding wonder in ordinary moments. Laura brings clarity and depth to interpretations shaped by the legendary voices of Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Shirley Horn, Carmen McRae, Michel Legrand and Barbra Streisand, among others. Her 2022 release Venez Donc Chez Moi earned a Juno nomination and in 2023 she was awarded the Prix Opus for Jazz Concert of the Year.An international touring artist, Laura has headlined jazz festivals across the US, Canada, Mexico, UK and Europe, captivating audiences through her innate storytelling. Her conversational style bridges the gap between singer and listener, making each performance intimate and personal. Her artistry has brought her to renowned stages including Paris L Olympia, Londons Royal Festival Hall, New Yorks Town Hall, and a regular at the Festival International de Jazz de Montral. Dorian is the son of legendary jazz drummer Kenny Phelps and Valerie Phelps, music creative and agent. Trained by Kenny Phelps, Dorian has produced a passionate, dynamic music project and show that brings a fresh mix of familiar melodies. The project has New York fusion jazz energy mixed with Robert Glasper-ish groove. Also, Hamilton Hardin of Norman Brown arranged and is featured in the project. Dorian has shared the stage with Pharez Whitted, Opal Staples, Steve Davis, Lamar Campbell, GangGang "Butter" artists of the year, Tad Robinson, countless Indy artists, events, and more.
