Bob Lark is recognized regionally, nationally and internationally as a contemporary jazz educator and performer of integrity. His approach to pedagogy and rehearsal techniques has been noted by participation in professional conferences; publication of articles; compact disc recordings as both a performer and ensemble director; and the direction of numerous student honors ensembles. Down Beat magazine recognized Bob's work in 2010 with their Jazz Education Achievement Award. In speaking of Lark, jazz icon Clark Terry stated, "He's a very good trumpet player, a very good musician. He's paid his dues." Recordings on the Jazzed Media label include those by The Bob Lark/Phil Woods Quintet, Bob Lark and his Alumni Big Band, and Bob Lark and Friends, with Phil Woods, Rufus Reid, and Jim McNeely. Bob's playing and writing are also featured on the CD recordings Until You and First Steps on the Hallway label. He is an exclusive Yamaha Performing Artist. Bob is an active clinician, soloist and guest conductor. He has served as host for the Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Solo Competition, is the past-president of the Illinois Unit of the International Association for Jazz Education, and has chaired the International Trumpet Guild jazz improvisation competition. For thirty-one years, Dr. Lark served as Professor of Music and Director of Jazz studies at DePaul University, in Chicago. Currently, Bob is the Director of Jazz Studies at Valparaiso University in Indiana. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in performance from the University of North Texas, having earlier earned a Master's degree from that school, and a Bachelor of Music Education degree from The Ohio State University.

Matsson himself has acknowledged Dylans influence, revealing that he started listening to him at the age of fifteen. Fascinated by Dylans covers, he delved into their origins, which gradually introduced him to early American folk artists like Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie. However, Matsson is quick to distance himself from being part of any specific tradition, stating, I dont want to be part of a tradition. I just want to do what feels natural to me. This is how I play, and this is how I write songs. His 2023 album Henry St. marks the first time Matsson recorded an album in a band setting. As described by Matsson, its the most me album yet, because it covers so many of the different noises in my head. Having been away from it taught me that making music and performing is what Im doing for the rest of my life, and Im so grateful for it. It has given me new confidence and playfulness. One of the great jazz guitarists of his generation, Mike Stern has the unique ability to play with the finesse and lyricism of Jim Hall, the driving swing of Wes Montgomery and the turbulent, overdriven attack of Jimi Hendrix. Growing up in the Washington, D.C. area, Stern revered all three of those guitar immortals, along with such potent blues guitarists as Albert and B.B. King. Aspects of those seminal influences can be heard in his playing on the 18 recordings he has released as a leader or in his acclaimed sideman work for Miles Davis, Billy Cobham, the Brecker Brothers, Jaco Pastorius, Steps Ahead, David Sanborn, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Joe Henderson and the all-star Four Generations of Miles band.

Known for his virtuosic playing and deep understanding of jazz, Orbert Davis will perform a selection of Miles Davis iconic music, celebrating the groundbreaking work of one of the most influential musicians in jazz history. This performance promises to capture the essence of Miles Davis sound while offering fresh, dynamic takes on his classic works.

This concert will feature Music Department students from The Chicago Academy for the Arts along with, and at times alongside, Academy faculty members. Under the direction of Academy Jazz Combo Directors Gregory Dudzienski, Callandra Youngleson, and Nicholas Olynciw, Academy students will be joined by faculty members Christopher Nolte, Jonah Lazarus, and Casey Nielsen to perform jazz standards, modern tunes, and pop songs! The Chicago Academy for the Arts is the nation's premier performing and visual arts high school, where young artists master the skills necessary for academic success, critical thought, and creative expression. The Academy's Music Department curriculum is rooted in the traditions of classical music and jazz while looking ahead to the potentials of commercial music and experimental composition. Students are immersed in: private study; musicianship and audio engineering courses; chamber, electronic, new music, pop/rock, and jazz ensembles; music composition; as well as masterclasses and performances.

He has had the opportunity to play with the Count Basie Orchestra, Cab Calloway Orchestra, Clif Wallace Big Band, Tom Garling Jazz Orchestra, Diego Rodriguez Big Band, Evon J. Sams Quintet/Sextet/Nonet, Afro-Caribbean Jazz Collective, and the Marlene Rosenberg Quartet. As a sideman, he has performed at notable venues and festivals in the Chicagoland area such as Andy's Jazz Club, the Elmhurst Jazz Festival, the Chicago Jazz Festival, Jazz Showcase, as well as venues in Indiana, Iowa, Madison WI, Milwaukee, WI, and Cleveland, OH. As a bandleader, he has performed at various locations in the Central and Southeast Arkansas area, Northern Illinois area, and at esteemed venues such as Fulton Street Collective and the Jazz Showcase in Chicago, IL. Recent achievements include being selected for the prestigious, donor-funded 2024 Jazz Aspen Snowmass Academy Big Band led by artistic director, Christian McBride, qualifying as a semi-finalist in the Jazz Improvisation Division for the International Trumpet Guild's 2024 and 2025 Ryan Anthony Memorial Trumpet Competition and earning 1st place in the 2024 Tom Williams Jazz Division of the National Trumpet Competition. Gabriel Wade is also an avid music educator as his educational roles include being the Trumpet Instructor for the Ravinia Lawndale Family Music School, a piano teacher at Naperville Music Academy, and a trumpet/piano teacher at the Northern Illinois University Community School of the Arts.

After thirty-five years of being at the forefront of the ever-evolving musical landscape of New Orleans, Grammy Award winner Jon Cleary decided to bring that sound back home, both figuratively and literally. He assembled his Absolute Monster Gentlemen (his acclaimed all-star big band) in his home studio in the Bywater neighborhood of New Orleans, drew up a setlist of some of his most beloved songs and some new favorites and rolled tape.We set out to capture that sound in the old-fashioned way: everybody in the room, playing together, Cleary explains.The result is The Bywater Sessions, a musical tour-de-force that showcases the grit, funk and joy thats packed concert halls from New Orleans to Tokyo and beyond. Co-produced by Cleary and John Porter (Roxy Music, The Smiths, Taj Mahal), its a stunning collection of performances that affirms Clearys place in the New Orleans musical vanguard.Theres a lot to be said for the lean and mean sound of a piano trio, stripped down to basics, simple and direct, Cleary says. But recently, Ive been experimenting with different combinations; adding horns, guitar, percussion and even another keyboard player. Everyone playing on this recording is a New Orleanian by birth or by choice, having learned their craft at the feet of the masters who in turn were taught by the old lions in their day - its a tradition stretching back over two hundred years. The roots go deep, but each generation, growing up with street parades and second-lines, absorbs the old and introduces the new, gently coaxing the essential essence into and out of each succeeding decade.

Its a sacred realm of folk wisdom and sorrowful vulnerability. NPR said he offers expertly-picked resonator guitar and lyrics that puncture the soul. Parr tours prolifically, and has performed at tastemaker events like the Newport Folk Fest and Pickathon.The Duluth-based guitarist, songwriter, and interpreter of traditional music has released twenty albums over two-and-a-half decades and has been known to perform up to 275 shows a year. Parr is a folk troubadour in the truest sense: taking to the road between shows, writing and rewriting songs as he plays, fueled by a belief that music is eternal and cannot be claimed or adequately explained. The sounds from his working-class upbringingincluding Folkways legends such as Lead Belly and Woody Guthrieimbue Parrs music with stylistic echoes of blues and folk icons of decades past. Parr sees himself merely as a continuer of a folk tradition.Parrs mastery of his craft is only more apparent when contextualized within the history of folk tradition to which Parr has dedicated his practice. The land and lives around and intersecting with Parr have always influenced him, from the hills and valleys of Hollandale, Minnesota to the Depression-era stories from his father.Parrs first album with Smithsonian Folkways, Last of the Better Days Ahead (2021), foregrounded his lyrical craftsmanship and sophisticated bluesman confidence, with spare production highlighting Parrs mastery of guitar and elevating his blues poetry. In his 2024 release, Little Sun, Parr weaved together stories celebrating music, community, and communing with nature. In doing so, he put forth an ambitious and raw album that exemplifies the best of Parrs sound: his blend of the blues and folk traditions with the steadfast originality of a poet.
