Cyrus Chestnut Trio

Born in 1963, Chestnut started his musical career at the age of three, playing piano at the Mount Calvary Star Baptist Church at the age of six in his hometown of Baltimore, MD. By age nine, he was studying classical music at the Peabody Preparatory Institute in Baltimore. In the fall of 1981, Cyrus began jazz education in Boston, MA at the Berklee College of Music. In 1985, he earned a degree in jazz composition and arranging. While at Berklee, Chestnut was awarded the Eubie Blake Fellowship, the Oscar Peterson, Quincy Jones, and Count Basie awards for exceptional performance standards at the college. After Berklee, Cyrus began further honing his craft as a sideman with some of the legendary and leading musicians in the business. Some of these great people include; Jon Hendricks, Michael Carvin, Donald Harrison, Terence Blanchard, Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Delfeayo Marsalis, Freddie Hubbard, Benny Golson, Curtis Fuller, Regina Carter, Chick Corea, Jimmy Heath, James Moody, Joe Williams, Isaac Hayes, Kathleen Battle, Betty Carter, and Dizzy Gillespie just to name a few. His association with Betty Carter, which began in 1991 significantly affected his outlook and approach to music, confirming his already iconoclastic instincts. Carter advised him to "take chances" and play things I've never heard," Chestnut says. As Cyrus was absorbing experiences as a sideman, he was also developing as a leader, recording and playing live around the world. There's a Brighter Day Coming was his first self-released album, followed by The Nutman Speaks (1992), The Nutman Speaks Again (1992), Another Direction (1993). The records received the prestigious Gold Disk award from Japan's leading jazz publication, Swing Journal. In the summer of 1993, Chestnut signed with Atlantic Records, releasing the critically acclaimed Revelation (1994), followed by The Dark Before The Dawn (1995), EarthStories (1996), Blessed Quietness (1996), and Cyrus Chestnut (which featured Anita Baker, James Carter, Joe Lovano, Ron Carter, Billy Higgins, and Lewis Nash, 1998). In 2000, Cyrus was given a great honor to pay tribute to his favorite cartoonist, Charles Schulz and first jazz influence, Vince Guaraldi in his interpretation of the classic Charlie Brown Christmas, which celebrated Mr. Schulz's 50th year of writing the saga of Charlie Brown. Vanessa Williams, Brian McKnight, The Manhattan Transfer and the Boys Choir of Harlem were a few of the participants on this star-studded record. In 2001, he released Soul Food, featuring bassist Christian McBride, drummer Lewis Nash, and special guest soloists including James Carter, Stefon Harris, Wycliffe Gordon, and Marcus Printup. This acclaimed record was included in Down Beat's list of the best records of 2001 and ascended to the "Top 10" on the Jazz charts. In 2005, Cyrus recorded "You Are My Sunshine" on the Warner Jazz label. This record was and still is a hit with jazz and gospel lovers alike. It featured Neal Smith on drums and Michael Hawkins on bass. In 2006, Chestnut made his Telarc debut with the release of Genuine Chestnut. The album is a carefully balanced mix of original material with some well-known pop melodies from the past several decades—all driven by Chestnut's eclectic yet unmistakable jazz sensibility.

Venna

After two EPs and an illuminating start to his career, Grammy Award-winning saxophonist Venna releases his debut album, MALIK.For Venna, its been a whirlwind of a journey to arrive at this point. Hes spent the better part of three years on the road touring, while coming back to London intermittently. In the spaces he finds himself in as a musician, hes often the youngest in the room. This period gave him the confidence to embark on this next stage of his career.Every experience, every memory, every conversation, anything new, any encounter has influenced how this album sounds. I might like a particular guitar tone from it, and then I bring it into my world. Everything has come and conjured into one place, and its beautiful to also hear and see, Venna says.Speaking on how he found the words to sing: Does anyone really have the words to say? I dont know. I dont know if I had the words to say. I just conjured words and thoughts and tried to make art out of it.Featuring vocals from Jorja Smith, Cari, Leon Thomas, Smino, MIKE, and himself, MALIK is where listeners can get lost and find themselves again. The album also features a long list of musicians including Rocco Palladino, Elijah Fox, AoD, J Warner, Marco Bernardis and longtime collaborator, Yussef Dayes.MALIK embodies the melting pot of sounds that reflects Vennas environment. Venna doesnt want to be rooted in jazz alone; his previous work for the likes of Burna Boy, Beyonc, KaliUchis, Wizkid, Knucks, J Hus and many more indicates that his saxophone was made for an expansive range of sounds.Speaking on the mood his debut album wants to evoke, Venna says: Its wherever you feel safe, where you feel vulnerable, where you feel like you can be lost, wherever you feel like you can be yourself. It could be in your car, in your bathtub, or at your favourite restaurant. It could be within the arms of your loved one. Thats the beauty of it.Venna doesnt see any of the albums features as mere guests but as collaborators and teammates while he steers the ship. In many ways, the process of making MALIK placed Venna into the role of band leader. However, Venna saw the process as a collective experience.Bringing a group of musicians together isnt easy when the music feels bigger than any individual, trying not to get too lost in the ephemeral that comes with recording sessions. It was a learning experience for Venna, and finding the right balance was key during the incubation of MALIK.Twisting featuring Rs brightest star Leon Thomas is a slight departure from Vennas more tranquil styles and, as he describes it, its a song for the steppers. Vennas vocal whispers and harmonies add warmth and depth on tracks such as Prophet. At points, Vennas vocals feel fleeting but the poise of the saxophone grounds them. My Way mesmerises with its soft-rock and folk inflections while So Paulo Memoir, at only a minute long, offers a brief taste of bossa nova blended with jazzy tones

Heartless Bastards: ‘All This Time’ 20th Anniversary

Nosalve soothes quite like music does. Like the ultimate balm, it releases tension and stress and reinvigorates the spirit. With a warm patchwork of rock 'n' roll, psychedelia, folk, alternative, and blues, Heartless Bastards unlock healing and catharsis within their music. Whether in the studio or on stage, the Austin-based band fronted by vocalist, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Erika Wennerstrom calm as they captivate. After generating over 100 million total streams and enrapturing audiences at legendary venues such as Red Rocks Amphitheatre, the group continue to connect with listeners everywhere through boundary-breaking sonics and straight-from-the-heart lyrics. , "rdquo" -> Music is medicine," observes Erika. , "rdquo" -> It gives me a sense of purpose beyond just creating art. The idea someone might find comfort in it or it can actually help another person is incredible to me. I don't know if I ever thought about it in those terms when I was younger. I've realized it over the years though." At the turn-of-the-century, Erika founded Heartless Bastards in Cincinnati, OH. Inspired by the likes of Joan Jett, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and more, she cut early demos in 2003, performing the bulk of the instruments herself. A bartending gig inspired the name Heartless Bastards. The bar's touch screen game posed the question, , "rdquo" -> What is Tom Petty's backing band?" and offered , "rdquo" -> The Heartless Bastards" as an answer option, so she accepted this humorous twist of fate and adopted it as her band's moniker. The band initially came to life with Stairs and Elevators in 2005, building a discography of fan favorites highlighted by All This Time [2006], The Mountain [2009], and the seminal Arrow [2012]. The latter captured #2 on the Billboard Top Independent Albums Chart, went Top 10 on the Tastemaker Albums Chart, and even cracked the Top 200. , "rdquo" -> Only For You" notably amassed north of 42.6 million Spotify streams and 17.2 million YouTube views. In the wake of the album, Time attested, , "rdquo" -> Wennerstrom's voice is one of the cornerstones of their success. It is tender even when it is severe, and she is unabashedly soulful even when she rocks, almost as though she were at once performing a slow country ballad and singing alongside Mark Bolan from T. Rex." Meanwhile, 2021's A Beautiful Life arrived to widespread praise from Uncut, Glide, and Classic Rock with Pitchfork going as far as to claim, , "rdquo" -> A Beautiful Life is her best album as a vocalist, as she finds new ways to bend her voice to different styles and sounds." In addition to sharing the stage with The Flaming Lips, The Decemberists, Wolfmother, Lucinda Williams, and The Avett Brothers, they lit up festivals a la Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, Newport Folk Festival, High Sierra Music Festival, and more. Through it all, Heartless Bastards constantly evolve. , "rdquo" -> The vibe is pretty eclectic," she goes on. , "rdquo" -> My voice ties it together. The earlier albums were a bit more garage- and punk-influenced. We've drawn from classic rock, indie, and folk too. I love music, and I'm always exploring sounds."
