Heartless Bastards: ‘All This Time’ 20th Anniversary

Nosalve soothes quite like music does. Like the ultimate balm, it releases tension and stress and reinvigorates the spirit. With a warm patchwork of rock 'n' roll, psychedelia, folk, alternative, and blues, Heartless Bastards unlock healing and catharsis within their music. Whether in the studio or on stage, the Austin-based band fronted by vocalist, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Erika Wennerstrom calm as they captivate. After generating over 100 million total streams and enrapturing audiences at legendary venues such as Red Rocks Amphitheatre, the group continue to connect with listeners everywhere through boundary-breaking sonics and straight-from-the-heart lyrics. , "rdquo" -> Music is medicine," observes Erika. , "rdquo" -> It gives me a sense of purpose beyond just creating art. The idea someone might find comfort in it or it can actually help another person is incredible to me. I don't know if I ever thought about it in those terms when I was younger. I've realized it over the years though." At the turn-of-the-century, Erika founded Heartless Bastards in Cincinnati, OH. Inspired by the likes of Joan Jett, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and more, she cut early demos in 2003, performing the bulk of the instruments herself. A bartending gig inspired the name Heartless Bastards. The bar's touch screen game posed the question, , "rdquo" -> What is Tom Petty's backing band?" and offered , "rdquo" -> The Heartless Bastards" as an answer option, so she accepted this humorous twist of fate and adopted it as her band's moniker. The band initially came to life with Stairs and Elevators in 2005, building a discography of fan favorites highlighted by All This Time [2006], The Mountain [2009], and the seminal Arrow [2012]. The latter captured #2 on the Billboard Top Independent Albums Chart, went Top 10 on the Tastemaker Albums Chart, and even cracked the Top 200. , "rdquo" -> Only For You" notably amassed north of 42.6 million Spotify streams and 17.2 million YouTube views. In the wake of the album, Time attested, , "rdquo" -> Wennerstrom's voice is one of the cornerstones of their success. It is tender even when it is severe, and she is unabashedly soulful even when she rocks, almost as though she were at once performing a slow country ballad and singing alongside Mark Bolan from T. Rex." Meanwhile, 2021's A Beautiful Life arrived to widespread praise from Uncut, Glide, and Classic Rock with Pitchfork going as far as to claim, , "rdquo" -> A Beautiful Life is her best album as a vocalist, as she finds new ways to bend her voice to different styles and sounds." In addition to sharing the stage with The Flaming Lips, The Decemberists, Wolfmother, Lucinda Williams, and The Avett Brothers, they lit up festivals a la Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, Newport Folk Festival, High Sierra Music Festival, and more. Through it all, Heartless Bastards constantly evolve. , "rdquo" -> The vibe is pretty eclectic," she goes on. , "rdquo" -> My voice ties it together. The earlier albums were a bit more garage- and punk-influenced. We've drawn from classic rock, indie, and folk too. I love music, and I'm always exploring sounds."

Mareux

Thursday, December 3 Mareux $25 Adv. / $30 Day of / 18+ / Doors: 7pm / Show: 8pm Mareux is the decade long electronic solo project from LA based musician and producer Aryan Ashtiani that has sparked an international cult following. His often romantic brand of darkwave, and songs like “The Perfect Girl,” have signaled a cultural paradigm shift across the online world that has united people across diverse subcultures. In describing Mareux’s sound, reviewer Fabrizio Lusso puts it best, “Mareux‘s moody and strongly emotional electronic laden lo-fi approach straddles the line between synth-pop, coldwave and post-punk in a stunning and infectious blend of thick glacial beats, lustrous synth stabs, sparse droning elements, vigorous bleak bass pulsations and a superb passionate voice, flavored by a mournful shadowy-goth feel, a seductive 80s flair, and sometimes subtle groovy r&b inflection.”

Abe Partridge and Clark Paterson

21+ / www.carolspub.comAbe Partridge is a heralded musician, singer/songwriter, visual artist, storyteller and documentarian based in Mobile, Alabama. Since the release of his debut album Cotton Fields and Blood for Days in 2018, Partridge has toured relentlessly, including several tours throughout Europe. He is a regular at several great music festivals such as the 30a Songwriters Fest, and the Laurel Cove Music Fest as well as listening rooms across the country including the legendary Bluebird Cafe in Nashville, Eddies Attic in Atlanta, and Duke's in Indianapolis. Recently, he toured extensively with Matthew Sweet, Drivin' N Cryin', and Dar Williams in support of his latest release Love in the Dark. He has performed on several syndicated NPR radio programs including, Mountain Stage and Woodsongs Old Time Radio Hour. Partridge along with co-producer Ferrill Gibbs created the Alabama Astronaut podcast, where Abe attempts to properly record songs previously undocumented at holiness, serpent-handling churches in Appalachia. It was in the Top Ten documentary podcasts on Apple Podcasts within days of its release and now has over 100k downloads and a 4.9-star rating. Clark Paterson doesn't write songs from a safe distance. He writes them from the middle of the wreckage: hospital rooms, court dates, bar shifts at Robert's Western World, old farmhouses mid-restoration, garages cluttered with vintage car parts, and the strange emotional territory between heartbreak, survival, and redemption. Raised on his family's farm near Sandusky, Michigan, Paterson grew up around hard work, old machinery, and the kind of rural honesty that eventually found its way into his songs. Before settling in East Nashville, he studied at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago and then traveled the world with a backpack and a guitar, absorbing stories everywhere he landed. In Clark's words , "rdquo" -> I became a backpacker dude and had a good run. I've played country music in the most unlikely places. I've also had the shit beat out of me and been deported." Those experiences shaped a songwriter who can move seamlessly between grit and poetry. Humor and heartbreak. This event is 21 and over. Any ticket holder unable to present valid identification indicating that they are at least 21 years of age will not be admitted to this event, and will not be eligible for a refund. GA Tickets do not include seating. Reserved Table purchase includes entrance to the show and a reserved table for the designated number of people. Please arrive 30 minutes prior to showtime to claim your table. A Holiday Cabaret with The Uptones

The Uptones are one of the most venerable post-collegiate/adult a cappella groups in Chicago; we were founded as Uptown Sound in 2009 — before The Sing-Off, before Pitch Perfect, just as a cappella was exploding off of college campuses nationwide. A group of young professionals, with a mixture of singing experience (from college a cappella groups, to musical theatre, to choirs, to nothing at all), came together and decided to set out on an adventure in the world of contemporary pop a cappella. We've gone from performing for 20-odd family and friends in a hole-in-the-wall coffee shop to regular audiences of over 120 at our biannual concerts, and from a repertoire of self-arranged music by none other than our talented members. In our more than a decade of singing together, over 70 people have joined us for at least a little while (anywhere from 12–16 at any one time). We sing because we enjoy performing, because we need a creative outlet… and we stay, because it's fun. The makeup of the group continues to change, but the personality remains the same: music, friendship, and a little bit of humor. We hope you'll love listening to us as much as we love performing for you.

Jamila Woods: 10 Years of HEAVN

Jamila Woods is a poet, singer, and multidisciplinary artist from the South Side of Chicago. Her critically acclaimed debut album HEAVN an ode to Blackness, girlhood, and home was released by JagJaguwar Records in 2017. Her sophomore project, LEGACY! LEGACY!, features twelve tracks named after writers, thinkers, and visual artists who have influenced the creators life and work including James Baldwin, Nikki Giovanni and Frida Kahlo. Her third album, Water Made Us (2023) is a genre-blending song cycle on love and the wisdom of surrender. The albums sequence is cleverly designed to echo the different stages of a relationship: the early days of easy compromising, flirtatiousness, and fun; the careful negotiation through moments of conflict or hurt; the grieving of something lost; and the tender realization at the end of it all that the person who is gone never really leaves, but stays with you as you find yourself ready to try again, refreshed and reassured. The albums sprawling 17 tracks span from autotuned RSend A Dove, to gentle acoustic folk rock on the heart wrenching Wolfsheep, to bubbly dream-pop on dance anthem Boomerang.Jamila has been featured on NPRs Tiny Desk, CBS This Morning, and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. She has shared stages with Corinne Bailey Rae, Rafael Saadiq, Bonobo, Common, Chance the Rapper, Brittany Howard, Macklemore, and many others. In 2022 she served as artist-in-residence at the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at New York University, teaching workshops on poetry, songwriting and live performance. An award-winning poet, Jamilas work often blurs boundaries between poem and song. As cultural critic Doreen St. Felix writes, It makes you wish all singers were poets.
