Best known for his warm, alternative R&B sound-- 22 year-old Malcolm “Todd” Hobert hails from Los Angeles and is an up-and-coming lovesick musician. Initially starting with a small community of fans, he began advertising on TikTok and had a breakthrough with his single Art House. While being significantly popular, it was overshadowed by the success of an advertisement for his then-unreleased track, Roommates. 3 videos teasing the song drew over 2 million views each. While it wasn’t new for his videos to reach millions, it skyrocketed him-- going from thousands of listeners to a million monthly. Malcolm released two EPs, Demos Before Prom and Shower Shoes, in 2022 and 2023. He released his first mixtape, Sweet Boy in April 2024, followed by his debut studio album, Malcolm Todd, a year later. On June 5th, Malcolm Todd’s sophomore studio album Do That Again was released. Musically, it blends elements of alternative R&B, indie pop, and bedroom pop, continuing Todd’s signature mix of intimate songwriting and modern production. The album received generally positive reviews from listeners, with particular praise directed toward tracks such as “Free.99”, “Gun to My Head”, “X’s & O’s”, and “I Saw Your Face”. The buoyant “Malcolm in the Middle” references the popular early-2000s sitcom; it’s a complex reckoning with relationship politics, delivering bereft lines like “if you can’t tell a word I say then I won’t make a sound” with forlorn verve.
