About

Sweeping Promises is an American post-punk duo originally from Boston, Massachusetts, and later based in Lawrence, Kansas. The group consists of Lira Mondal and Caufield Schnug. Multi-instrumentalist Spenser Gralla has performed as their live drummer since 2019. The two musicians met during their undergraduate studies at Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas, in 2008. They initially participated in various musical projects and later began writing music together exclusively. Over time, this collaboration developed into a long-term partnership. In their early career, they were involved in different projects within the Arkansas music scene. Sweeping Promises was formed in late 2019 following a jam session in an unused science laboratory that had been converted into an art space in Boston. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the group relocated to Lawrence, Kansas, where they purchased a house that also functions as a recording studio. The duo released their debut album, "Hunger for a Way Out", in August 2020. The album features a post-punk style characterized by guitar-driven arrangements and melodic vocals. It received attention from music publications and independent reviewers within the post-punk scene. Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie Zine named it their preferred release of 2020, citing its simplicity and energy. Their second album, "Good Living Is Coming For You", was released in June 2023. The recording process differed from their debut, which had been recorded using a single-microphone approach. In interviews, Caufield Schnug described an interest in recording in varied and less controlled environments, as an alternative to more precision-focused production methods. In May 2026, the band announced a North American tour scheduled for the fall of 2026. Their album "You Say I Romanticize" is scheduled for release in August 2026.
